Ozone

Hot Tub Ozonators

An Ozonator for hot tubs is an accessory that helps improve water quality and bather enjoyment. It uses O3, a potent and naturally occurring molecule composed of three oxygen atoms, to help purify and disinfect the water. Ozone is known to be an excellent sanitizer because of its oxidizing properties, as it can break down organic and inorganic waste, algae, bacteria, and microorganisms. While Ozone should never be used as a stand-alone system, it effectively complements traditional chemical systems such as chlorine and bromine.

Ozonator operation is straightforward as there are two types of devices. Ozonators generate ozone gas through corona discharge or ultraviolet (UV) light. The Ozone is then introduced into the hot tub's circulation system, typically through an ozone jet, breaking down bather waste. Ozone has a short life span, so it has no chemical residue and a clean smell like after a thunder shower, making it environmentally friendly and a low-maintenance water purification system.

While ozonators are not a complete replacement for traditional sanitizers, they complement them by reducing the overall chemical usage required to maintain a safe and clean hot tub. You should always check it regularly and monitor your ozonator to ensure it functions properly. This way, you will enjoy your hot tub soaking experience.

How is Ozone made in your hot tub?

Ozone in a hot tub is made when single oxygen (o2) molecules are split apart into two free oxygen molecules by UV Light or Corona Discharge ( CD ). Once this happens, the newly freed oxygen collides and combines with a single oxygen molecule (02), making (o3) ozone. While Ozone is a powerful oxidizer, it is very unstable and doesn't last very long. For this reason, it must be continually produced to be effective.

Will Ozone affect the pH of my Hot Tub Water?

Ozone is pH neutral and will not affect the pH of the hot tub water. This is what makes it such a good oxidizer.

How long does an Ozonator last?

It depends on what type of Ozonator that you have. UV Ozonators have a light bulb that can be replaced, and Corona Discharge usually has a computer chip that can also be replaced. Please check with your spa manual to see the recommended run times.

Is Ozone safe to use?

Ozonators usually produce a small amount of Ozone, which is insignificant to the atmosphere. When dissolved in the hot tub water, it is safe and doesn't last long, and the excess Ozone will convert back into oxygen. Ozonators should only be used in outdoor spas, as proper venting is required.

How long should an ozonator run for?

We always suggest that you read your owner's manual to determine the proper run times indicated by the manufacturer. In general, a hot tub with an ozonator should run at least 8-12 hours daily to produce the adequate amount of Ozone to be effective. It is also essential to make sure that you remove your hot tub cover to allow the hot tub to vent excessive Ozone.

Is an Ozonator standard equipment on a hot tub?

Most new hot tubs come Ozone ready, and you are only required to purchase an ozonator, which entails a simple hookup. Some hot tub brands come all-inclusive with built-in electronic water purification systems (Corona Discharge). For hot tubs that are not factory-equipped for Ozone, getting one installed can be much more complicated. We recommend purchasing a hot tub that has Ozone already installed.

Will an ozonator void my warranty?

Ozonators are standard equipment on most hot tubs and are recommended by the manufacturers. Non-removal of your hot tub cover for extended periods can harm the poly liner of your hot tub cover, as it is recommended to allow the hot tub to vent.
